Director of Communications

The Director of Communications is responsible for overseeing all public relations, media strategy, and communication efforts for TNM. This role focuses on managing TNM’s messaging, ensuring consistent and effective communication with both internal and external audiences, and elevating TNM’s presence in the public eye. The Director leads media outreach, branding, and public engagement, ensuring that all communications align with TNM’s strategic goals and advocacy for Texas independence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Media Strategy and Public Relations: Develop and execute a comprehensive media strategy to increase TNM’s visibility and position the movement positively in the public eye.
  • Message Consistency and Branding: Ensure that TNM’s messaging is consistent across all platforms (digital, print, public appearances, and internal communications) and that the brand reflects TNM’s mission and values.
  • Public Engagement and Outreach: Lead efforts to engage the public through social media, public events, and communication channels, raising awareness about Texas independence and mobilizing supporters.
  • Crisis Communication: Manage TNM’s response to public relations challenges, ensuring swift and thoughtful communication to protect the organization’s reputation.
  • Content Creation and Oversight: Oversee the creation of newsletters, website updates, press releases, blogs, and social media posts to ensure they are aligned with TNM’s goals and maintain high standards for accuracy.
  • Internal Communication: Manage internal communication to keep TNM staff, volunteers, and members informed about organizational priorities, strategies, and events.
  • Media Relations and Influencer Outreach: Cultivate relationships with key media outlets, journalists, and influencers to amplify TNM’s message and secure positive media coverage.
  • Monitoring and Reporting: Track media coverage, social media engagement, and public sentiment to assess the effectiveness of campaigns and adjust strategies as needed.

The Director of Communications ensures that all messaging aligns with TNM’s goals, helping to mobilize members, influence public opinion, and elevate TNM’s visibility in the political landscape. This role is pivotal in maintaining TNM’s credibility and promoting the cause of Texas independence through effective and targeted communication strategies.

Estimated Time Requirements

  • 15-20 hours per week to manage media relations, public engagement, and internal/external communications.
  • Additional time during crisis situations, major media events, or statewide campaigns.
  • Availability to coordinate with other department heads, manage content creation teams, and handle urgent PR needs.

Skills/Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in public relations, media strategy, and communications.
  • Strong writing, editing, and content development skills.
  • Ability to manage relationships with media outlets, influencers, and journalists.
  • Experience in overseeing digital campaigns, including social media and email marketing.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience with crisis management and the ability to respond swiftly to public relations challenges.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in political advocacy or working with grassroots movements.
  • Familiarity with data analytics tools to track communication effectiveness.
  • Knowledge of Texas politics and advocacy efforts related to independence or state sovereignty.
