Legislative Director

The Legislative Director is responsible for developing and leading a team of Legislative Liaisons to establish and maintain relationships with Texas legislators and their staff in both the Texas Senate and Texas House. This role focuses on advocating for TNM’s legislative priorities, including securing a supermajority of support for a TEXIT referendum and other pro-independence policies. The Legislative Director works to ensure the successful filing, sponsorship, and passage of TNM’s legislative agenda.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recruit and Train Legislative Liaisons – Identify, onboard, and train a team of dedicated volunteers to serve as TNM’s direct contacts with Texas legislators.
  • Develop Legislative Strategies – Create and execute a plan to strategically assign Legislative Liaisons to Texas legislators, ensuring TNM has advocates in every legislative office.
  • Maintain Communication with Liaisons – Establish regular meetings (online, phone, or in-person) with Legislative Liaisons to ensure coordination and alignment with TNM’s goals.
  • Organize Annual Training Sessions – Plan and execute at least one in-person training session per year for all Legislative Liaisons, ideally before the legislative session begins.
  • Plan and Lead Legislative Action Days – Coordinate efforts to bring TNM supporters to the Texas Capitol for targeted lobbying efforts.
  • Track and Document Legislative Interactions – Maintain thorough records of all interactions between legislators, their staff, and TNM representatives to assess progress and adjust strategies.
  • Develop Persuasive Messaging – Work with Legislative Liaisons to craft key talking points and strategies for engaging with legislators and their staff effectively.

Remote, with required travel to the Texas Capitol and other legislative meetings as needed.

Estimated Time Requirements

  • Ongoing: 10-15 hours per week, including meetings, training, and research.
  • Legislative Session: Increased time commitment during the Texas legislative session for in-person lobbying, meetings, and strategy execution.
  • Legislative Action Days: Additional preparation and in-person engagement during TNM-organized Capitol advocacy events.

Skills/Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of the legislative process in the Texas Senate and House.
  • Experience in political advocacy, lobbying, or grassroots organizing.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with elected officials and their staff.
  • Strong public speaking and communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and execute training programs for volunteers.
  • Data management skills for tracking legislative interactions and commitments.
  • Commitment to TNM’s mission and legislative priorities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing volunteers or teams in a political or advocacy setting.
  • Prior lobbying experience at the Texas Capitol.
  • Knowledge of Texas political power structures and key influencers.
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities.
